⏳
Sometimes available, in limited runs. Kona Gold is a low-volume preservation line grown from preserved island stock; when we have seed, restocks are announced in the Sacred Grove. Packs ship as 5-seed packs with full lineage documentation. The same island line is also kept by Pua Mana ʻOhana, part of the wider work of keeping her alive.

What makes Kona Gold famous

Kona Gold is a bright golden sativa from the Kona side of the Big Island, and one half of the pair (alongside Maui Wowie) that first taught the mainland the names of Hawaiian cannabis. Where Maui Wowie carried the sweetness, Kona Gold carried the punch: a powerful, clear-headed, and long-lasting cerebral high that earned its reputation the hard way.

The name has two roots, and both are literal. The first is the coat: she comes completely covered in golden crystals, a trichome blanket dense enough that the color reads gold before you have touched her. The second is the hardware. Kona Gold earned champion gold cup status among the heaviest hitting Hawaiian sativas ever to reach the scene, and the name records both the look and the record.

She grew in the same volcanic, sun-drenched terroir that makes Kona coffee famous: porous lava soils, elevation, and reliable island sun. Those slopes run up the flanks of Hualālai and Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth, and she has been cultivated there with aloha and Big Island love for hanauna, generations.

◈ Terroir Note The Kona and Kaʻū districts are known worldwide for coffee for a reason: young volcanic soil, elevation, and sun combine into a terroir that rewards slow-finishing crops. The same conditions that build a world-class coffee cherry build a world-class golden sativa.
II · Flavor & Aroma

Sweet, tropical, Hawaiian honey

Kona Gold leads sweet and tropical, and what growers keep reaching for to describe her is Hawaiian honey: a warm, thick, floral sweetness with fruit behind it rather than anything sharp. Bright citrus peel sits underneath, but the honey is the headline and it carries straight through to the exhale.

The effect is powerful, clear-headed, and long-lasting: a genuinely cerebral high that stays lucid rather than heavy. It runs long, which is fitting for a strain that also flowers long. This is a thinking-person's sativa, focused and sustained, not a fog.

Which undersells the arrival. Growers who came up on her describe the first hit as something closer to a clean knockout, one mean Hawaiian punch that lays your worries flat before the clarity settles in behind it. Potent, passionate, and totally devastating in the way the old Big Island reputation promised. Then the long serene sail into the Kona sunset.

III · Growing Notes

How to grow Kona Gold

Environment

Kona Gold is a classic long-flowering island sativa: warmth, light, and time. Outdoor growers in zones 9 to 11 (Hawaii, southern California, southern Florida) can finish her in a single season. Mainland growers further north should plan for an indoor flower: the 11 to 13 week cycle won't fit a short outdoor summer at higher latitudes.

Structure

Expect a tall sativa with big stretch: plan for 2 to 3 times vertical growth in the first month of flower. Topping early (after the 4th node) and low-stress training from week three of veg will keep the canopy under control on a plant this eager to reach for the sun.

Feeding

Kona Gold is at her best on living soil or KNF, not salt-based nutrients. Like all Hawaiian heritage lines, she was selected over generations against native island microbiology: she expects partners in the rhizosphere. Build a soil from the DIY Organic Living Soil Guide or feed with KNF inputs. Avoid overfeeding nitrogen in flower; Kona Gold finishes with a graceful natural fade into her signature amber-gold when she's given room to do so.

Pest resistance

Naturally good resistance to powdery mildew (Big Island valley and gulch pressure selected for this) and decent to spider mites. Vulnerable to caterpillars in the long late-flower window. Treat preventatively with Beauveria bassiana or stick to the white oil schedule.

Harvest

With an 11 to 13 week bloom, Kona Gold rewards patience and ripens unevenly: different colas finish at different times. Selective harvest (chopping the top third first, returning a week later for the lowers) preserves the bright citrus terpenes and the golden finish better than a single chop. Read more in the Trichome Harvest Guide.

IV · Provenance

Lineage & preservation

Be straight about the state of these genetics: a truly pure, unhybridized Kona Gold is critically endangered and, in the wild, all but extinct. Decades of Green Harvest eradication thinned the remote Kona and Kaʻū gulch plots, and what survived was widely crossed with mainland poly-hybrids. Most "Kona Gold" sold today is a stabilized heirloom line or a modern hybrid, not an untouched landrace.

We don't claim to hold the pure original. What we can offer traces to the quiet preservation work of island seed savers who kept the old island lines going through the eradication years and since. A great deal of that work runs through Pua Mana ʻOhana and their Pua Mana 1st Hawaiian Pakalōlō Seed Bank, who have kept Hawaiian heirloom and landrace genetics in circulation instead of letting them disappear. Our Kona Gold is grown from that preserved stock and selected back toward the old Kona profile. We keep it in isolated mother rooms (no pollen contact with our other lines) and seed only from parents that hold those traits.

This is not a strain we'll ever scale. It's a strain we're trying to keep alive.
