Green Harvest: Seed Saver
Six Hawaiian landrace lines are in your keeping. For fourteen years the helicopters come every season. What you choose to save, and what it costs you to save it, is the whole story of Hawaiian cannabis.
The situation
In 1977 the State of Hawaiʻi began flying coordinated eradication sweeps over the islands. The program ran for the better part of twenty-five years. You are a grower holding seed for six heritage lines, and every season you must decide where to put them in the ground.
- Each season you pick where and how to plant. Every option trades exposure against genetic diversity.
- Big open populations are how landraces were made, and they are exactly what a spotter sees from the air.
- Hiding works. Small plots and indoor rooms survive sweeps, but a room holds a fraction of a valley, and diversity narrows every year you shelter.
- Lose a season to a raid and you can lose a line for good. Lines do not come back.
