The TRM Golden Rule
"Start Low, Go Slow"

At Tropical Roots Maui, we believe the best experience is a mindful one. Whether you are enjoying our infused recipes at home or using our products to craft your own. Low and Slow is the island way.

⏱️
Rule 01 The Golden Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

Edibles and drinkables are processed differently by your body than other methods. Understanding the timeline is the single most important thing you can do for a good experience.

The Science: When you consume cannabis orally, cannabinoids are metabolized through the liver — transforming Delta-9 THC into 11-Hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound. This is why edibles feel stronger and last longer than inhalation, even at the same milligram dose.
Kānehiwa's Wisdom: "The spirit of the plant moves slower through the stomach than the breath. Respect the timeline of the gut — patience is the alchemist's greatest tool."
🕐 The Wait

It can take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to feel the full effects. Your metabolism, body weight, and what you've eaten all play a role.

The Two-Hour Rule

Resist the urge to have a second helping until at least 90 to 120 minutes have passed. You can always add more — you can't take it back once it's enjoyed.

🎯 Where to Start

If you are new to infusions, begin with a micro-dose of 2.5–5mg to see how your body responds before working up. Even experienced users should start low with a new recipe or carrier.

Rule 02 Understanding the "Liquid Edge"

When you use an emulsified infusion like our Infused Island Tea, the onset may be slightly faster than a traditional baked good. This is because the liquid can begin absorbing earlier in your digestive tract.

Why drinks hit differently: Oil-in-water emulsions (like our MCT-infused teas and lemonades) create tiny oil droplets suspended in liquid. These can begin absorbing through the stomach lining faster than a solid edible that must first be broken down by digestion.
Tip for new infusion drinkers: Start with half a serving of any infused drink on your first try. You can always pour the second half after waiting 90 minutes.
⚠️

Mixing with Alcohol: Be mindful when mixing infusions with alcohol. The two can amplify each other's effects significantly. We recommend sticking to the tea and lemonade recipes for the cleanest, most refreshing experience.

Rule 03 Preparation Matters
🫙 The Emulsion Protocol

Infused MCT oil naturally rises to the top of your drink. Always give your pitcher or glass a vigorous stir or shake before every pour to ensure an even dose. Skipping this step means the first glass might have nearly 0mg, while the final glass could carry 50mg — consistency is key to a controlled experience.

🍽️ The Full Belly Factor

Enjoying an infusion on an empty stomach may lead to a faster, more intense experience. We recommend enjoying your Tropical Roots treats alongside a light snack for a more gradual, comfortable onset.

Rule 04 Storage & Family Safety

Keep the Aloha safe for everyone in your home. Infused products should always be treated with the same care as any other adult-only item.

🏷️ Label Clearly

Always use our printable dosage cards or clearly mark your containers with the dose, date, and a visible "Contains Cannabis" warning. Never store infused treats in generic packaging like plain bags where they can be mistaken for regular food.

🔒 Secure Storage

Store all infused items in a cool, dark place out of reach of children and pets. A locked cabinet or high shelf is ideal.

❄️ Fridge & Freezer

MCT-based treats like chocolate bark and gummies stay best in the fridge or freezer. Infused drinks keep for 5–7 days refrigerated.

🌡️ Protect Your Infusion

Keep infused MCT oil away from direct heat and sunlight, which can degrade potency over time. Amber glass jars are ideal for storage.

🌿
🧬
Rule 05 Mixing with Other Substances
Alcohol + Cannabis: Combining cannabis edibles with alcohol is not recommended, especially for new users. Alcohol increases the absorption rate of THC and can intensify effects unpredictably. If you choose to mix, do so with extreme caution and always start with a much lower dose than usual.
Medications: Cannabis can interact with certain medications, particularly blood thinners, antidepressants, and sedatives. If you are on prescription medication, consult your doctor before consuming infused products.
Our Recommendation: For the cleanest, most refreshing experience. Stick to our tea and lemonade recipes, which are designed to complement the infusion without interference.

Rule 06 Setting the Sanctuary

The environment in which you consume the mana dictates the quality of the journey. Prepare your space with intention — comfort, hydration, and a grounding plan will elevate the entire experience.

💧 Hydration Station

Always have fresh, non-infused water or an herbal tea nearby. Staying hydrated keeps you grounded and helps smooth the ride from start to finish.

🛡️ The Antidote Kit

Keep high-quality CBD oil or Black Peppercorns (rich in Caryophyllene) on hand. Chewing a few peppercorns can help mitigate an anxiety spike if a dose feels too heavy — a simple, time-tested grounding technique.

🧘 Comfort & Company

Choose a space where you feel safe and relaxed. Being around trusted people and having calming music, a cozy blanket, or a garden view nearby makes all the difference, especially for first-timers.

🚫 No Driving

Plan ahead: never drive or operate machinery after consuming edibles. Effects can last 4–8+ hours. Settle in and let the journey unfold safely in your sanctuary.

Alchemist's Notes MCT Mastery & The Terpene Bridge
MCT Mastery: We use MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil as our carrier because its shorter fatty acid chains provide a faster, cleaner bridge for cannabinoids to enter your system — better bioavailability and a smoother onset compared to butter or long-chain fats.
The Terpene Bridge: Eating a fresh mango 45 minutes before your edible may enhance the Myrcene levels in your system, potentially deepening the relaxation effect and body sensation. If you're aiming for a mellow evening, plan accordingly!
Tolerance Resets: If you consume edibles regularly and notice diminishing effects, consider a 48–72 hour tolerance break. Your endocannabinoid system recalibrates quickly, and a short reset can make a standard dose feel like the first time again.
