The history of Hawaiian pakalolo (cannabis) is a long and complex story — beginning with its uncertain arrival on the islands, through cultural integration, criminalization, and finally the legendary landrace strains that define island heritage today.
It's no surprise that pakalolo thrived in Hawaiʻi once the seeds made their way to the islands. The soil is rich in minerals, the air is humid and tropical, and there's more than enough rain to sustain plants that grow up to 365 centimeters tall.
A newspaper published in 1842 is the first reference to cannabis on the islands. The locals called it pakalolo, or "narcotic tobacco." Although 1842 is the first record of the plant, it was definitely present on the island long before that.
The first theory is that pakalolo was brought by Polynesian immigrants when they sailed from Asia to the islands in the 4th century, carrying seeds across thousands of miles of open ocean.
The second theory is that pakalolo was brought by Mexican vaqueros — cowboys — who arrived in the late 18th century to work on the cattle ranches that dotted the island's upland plains.
The third theory is that a European horticulturalist named Joseph Banks brought pakalolo to the island in the mid-to-late 1800s. If true, the legendary Hawaiian Duckfoot landrace may be among those original seeds.
"The soil is rich in minerals, the air is humid and tropical, and there's more than enough rain to sustain these plants. It's no surprise the islands became a sanctuary."— Tropical Roots Maui

Kānehiwa is no mere mortal — he is a living embodiment of the Āina itself. Legend says he was carved from the heartwood of a sacred Koa tree that grew in the dark, mineral-rich soil near the peak of Haleakalā, Maui's great volcano. His spirit was awakened by the first gentle rains and the persistent, life-giving mana that saturates the island's volcanic soil.
The vibrant blue and green of his mask are not paint, they are the living colors of the deep-sea currents and the lush rainforest canopy of Hāna. For centuries, Kānehiwa was a silent sentinel, watching over the most sacred and hidden cultivations on Maui.
While the Menehune built temples and fishponds, Kānehiwa tended to the A'a — the deepest, most potent roots that held the secrets of Hawaiian natural medicine and sustenance. When the sacred Golden Root Pakalolo was first introduced to the islands, it was vulnerable. Kānehiwa took it under his protection, recognizing its inherent power and its ability to thrive under the unique Maui sun.
"The soil must taste of yesterday's sun and tomorrow's rain."— Kānehiwa, Guardian of Tropical Roots Maui
Kānehiwa sees not just the flower, but the roots.
Carved from sacred Koa heartwood
Awakened by Maui's first rains
His grip guards quality & purity
The sign — a modern sacred mission

He learned to coax the richest colors, the strongest buds, and the most robust growth from the plant — ensuring its genetic integrity and superior quality across every generation. His ancient knowledge maximizes the potential of every plant, from the moment the seed sprouts to the final harvest.
Today, Kānehiwa has revealed himself to the founders of Tropical Roots Maui. He inspects the roots, checks the soil quality, and uses his ancient wisdom to ensure that every product we grow and share is imbued with the true mana of the land.
The strong grip on the cannabis plant is not just possession — it represents his unyielding commitment to guarding the quality and purity of the strain. The wooden sign, "Tropical Roots Maui," is a modern symbol of the sacred mission he now upholds.
At Tropical Roots Maui, we believe that the highest quality harvest doesn't come from a bottle of synthetic chemicals — it comes from a deep, symbiotic relationship with the land (ʻĀina).
Born in the wake of the Lahaina wildfires, our mission is to restore the connection between the cultivator and the soil. We aren't just growing plants; we are rebuilding the Microbial Fortress of Maui, one garden at a time.
Kānehiwa — our guardian spirit stands fierce at the threshold of the sacred lands, holding the "Tropical Roots Maui" sign with one hand and his staff in the other. He is no mere mortal; carved from the heartwood of a sacred Koa tree near the peak of Haleakalā, his spirit was awakened by the first gentle rains and the life-giving mana of Maui's volcanic soil. Today, he is our silent partner — a source of ancient wisdom, guiding every product we grow and share.
